I promise you this recipe is one of the most requested ones I get when I bring treats. This is NOT the normal recipe and I've included the secret ingredients and steps that makes this stand out. While it takes just a little longer, it is well worth it!

If I am making a massive batch of treats for the school or events, I typically make the standard recipe but I have used this for several Halloween Monster Treats or for friend's gifts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter

  • 1 bag (10 oz) small marshmallows

  • 1/4 heaping teaspoon coarse sea salt (I linked my favorite - pink Himalayan)

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Directions:

  1. Spray an 8x8 square pan with baking Pam.

  2. In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. Let this melt, foam, turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty (this is part of the special process that makes this recipe the best). Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom as you do.

  3. This is one of those recipes you MUST watch because once the butter starts browning, it goes quickly and you don't want it to burn, which can happen in less than a minute!

  4. As soon as the butter takes on a nutty color and smell, turn the heat off and stir in the marshmallows. The heat from the melted butter will be enough to melt them, but if it is not, turn it back on lowest stove setting until the marshmallows are smooth.

  5. Remove the pot from the stove and stir in the salt and cereal together. Quickly spread into prepared pan. Do NOT skip the sea salt!! Combined with the brown butter it takes this recipe over the top! These are the secret KEY ingredients in this recipe that sets it apart from the everyday regular rice krispies.

  6. Use a piece of waxed or parchment paper sprayed with baking Pam to press the rice krispies down in the pan and evenly into the edges and corners. Let cool, cut into squares.
